Aromatherapy usually uses essential oils to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety. Essential oils have fewer side effects and more diversified applications, compared to traditional drugs. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the studies in preclinical and clinical trials on essential oils’ anxiolytic effects. In animal models, the majority of essential oil studies are anxiolytic. Inhalation and oral administration in preclinical and clinical trials were two typical methods for the essential oil administration.
