Essential Oils and Anxiolytic Aromatherapy

A variety of essential oils are currently being used to alleviate anxiety, stress, and depression as aromatherapy agents. Popular anxiolytic oils include lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rose (Rosa damascena), orange (Citrus sinensis), bergamot (Citrus aurantium), lemon (Citrus limon), sandalwood (Santalum album), sage clary (Salvia sclarea), roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis), and rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium spp.).

Studies have examined the chemical components and CNS effects of these essential aromatherapy oils and recent findings of additional essential oils with anxiolytic activity.
