Physical Effects of Stress on your Body

Stress impacts all. If you control your baby, job, manage your finances, or deal with a tough relationship, you can find signs of stress. Some stress is beneficial, but too much stress can make you sick, both physically and mentally ill. 

 

The first phase in stress reduction is to consider tension symptoms. Nonetheless, it is more challenging than you thought to understand stress signs.  Some of us are so stressed, we don’t really realize that we are stressed until we come to a break. 

What Is Stress?

Stress is the body’s reaction to harmful situations — whether they’re real or perceived. When you feel threatened, a chemical reaction occurs in your body that allows you to act in a way to prevent injury. This reaction is known as “fight-or-flight,”” or the stress response.

Stress means different things to different people. What causes stress in one person may be of little concern to another.  Some individuals can withstand stress better than others. Not all stress is bad; It can help you achieve tasks in limited doses and avoid damage. 

Our bodies can deal with small amounts of discomfort. However, without pain, we are not prepared to cope with chronic long-term stress.

 

What are the stress symptoms?

Stress can affect the mental, behavioral, cognitive, and physical health. Because people deal with stress differently, stress symptoms can change. The symptoms may be ambiguous, and medical problems can be the same. This is important to speak to your doctor about them. Each of the following stress symptoms can occur. 

 

Emotional stress symptoms include:

 

  • Quick to get distracted, irritated, and moody.
  •  Feels stressed that you had to lose power or influence.
  •  You can’t relax and ease your mind. 
  • Feels alone, useless, and discouraged.

 

Physical symptoms of stress include:

  • Upset stomach, including diarrhea, constipation, and nausea
  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles
  • Low energy
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing
  • Frequent colds and infections
  • Headaches
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Loss of sexual desire and/or ability
  • Nervousness and shaking, ringing in the ear, cold or sweaty hands and feet
  • Clenched jaw and grinding teeth

 

Cognitive symptoms of stress include:

 

  • Constant worrying
  • Forgetfulness and disorganization
  • Poor judgment
  • Racing thoughts
  • Inability to focus
  • Being pessimistic or seeing only the negative side

 

Behavioral symptoms of stress include:

  • Increased use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes
  • Procrastinating and avoiding responsibilities
  • Exhibiting more nervous behaviors, such as nail-biting, fidgeting, and pacing
  • Changes in appetite — either not eating or overeating.

 

What Are the Consequences of Long-Term Stress?

 

There’s no reason to worry over a little stress every now and then. Though persistent stress can contribute to or worsen other severe health issues, including mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders. The approach to preventing emotional management and the safety implications is to learn the stress symptoms.
